The glass bottles of olive oil, fruit juice and honey exported to the US market, which are often referred to as FDA compliance in the industry, essentially meet the 21 CFR Food Contact substances regulations. It is not a single certificate but a transfer test conducted by a third-party laboratory, proving that under the expected contact conditions, harmful substances will not be released in excess. The test will select different simulation solutions based on the type of contents: for acidic foods like fruit juice, acetic acid is used as the simulation solvent; For oil-based edible oils, ethanol or oil simulants should be used to conduct leaching tests at specified temperatures and for specified durations.
The core testing items include heavy metal migration (mainly lead and cadmium), total migration amount, sensory testing, thermal shock testing, and internal stress detection. The acidity of fruit juice is high, and the risk of heavy metal migration is higher than that of neutral oils, making it a key point for detection. Honey and olive oil are mostly stored at room temperature, but some customers require hot filling. It is necessary to add thermal shock resistance tests to prevent self-explosion during filling and transportation.
Many pitfalls in foreign trade lie in the fact that only a general report is used without distinguishing the application scenarios. The test conditions for the same batch of glass bottles used for juice and edible oil are different, so the reports cannot be mixed. In addition, bottle cap gaskets, sealing rings, and label adhesives are also classified as food contact accessories and need to be included in the FDA compliance assessment. Many customers only focus on the bottle body and neglect the accessories, resulting in the entire batch of goods being detained.
It is recommended that each batch of shipments be accompanied by a test report and compliance statement issued by an ISO17025 laboratory. Confirm the target market limits with the customer in advance. California Proposition 65 in the United States has stricter lead and cadmium control, which needs to be evaluated separately. Prepare contingency plans in advance to ensure the smooth delivery of export orders.
